Discover how a simple walk and a child’s curiosity sparked the beginning of Curious Kids, growing from a single idea into a thriving community.
A story of sunshine, shadows and science!
Let me take you a few years back. My own curious kids were 3 and 5 - before "Curious Kids" even existed.
We were out for a walk on a sunny day, playing shadow catch (you know the game — running around trying to step on each other’s shadows).
Then suddenly, a cloud moved in front of the sun.
My youngest stopped still, looked down… and her face fell.
"Mummy... where has my shadow gone?"
I tried to explain about clouds moving and blocking the sun — but she just looked at me, not really getting it.
When we got home, we tried something different. We grabbed some cotton wool to make our own ‘cloud’ and played with a torch to see what happens when the ‘cloud’ covers the light.
And suddenly… it clicked!
She could see what was happening.
She could experience it.
Children don’t just need answers.
They need to see and do to truly understand.
And although I didn’t know it at the time…
That was the very beginning of Curious Kids.
I began to wonder - would other children enjoy learning science this way too?
What began as a simple idea — exploring children’s questions through hands-on science — quickly grew into something much bigger. Families loved the Curious Kids approach, shared sessions with friends, and a wonderful community of like-minded parents began to grow.
A year in I had a couple of very fortuitous phone calls – a mum, who home-educates, asked if I could attend one of their meet ups and a Head of a Primary School heard about Curious Kids and contacted me about running an after-school clubs.
And so, our Home-Ed Curious Kids sessions and work in Primary Schools began!
As Curious Kids grows, so does my ambition to help even more families explore children’s curiosity through hands-on science they can trust — not just those who can attend our in-person sessions. That’s why I’ve created our 10 Free Hands-On Science Activities to Spark Your Child’s Curiosity, so you can keep nurturing those wonderful “why?” questions wherever you are.

Sophie!
Hi, I’m Sophie — founder of Curious Kids, scientist, and mum.
Curious Kids was inspired by my own children and their endless curiosity about the world around them. Their questions made me stop and notice things that, as adults, we often take for granted. We had so much fun exploring the answers in ways they could actually see, do, and understand.
As a scientist, with extensive experience working with young people, I understand how to engage children and make science fun and accessible. So, Curious Kids was born — with a mission to celebrate children’s curiosity and explore their questions through hands-on science.
I absolutely love designing activities that help children explore their questions in ways they can visualise, experience, and remember — and I hope you and your curious kid will love our approach too.

Hi, I'm Hannah! I'm a former primary school teacher, mum and science enthusiast - and I'm also Curious Kids' first franchisee.
I joined Curious Kids in October 2025 after experiencing Sophie's amazing sessions first-hand with my own daughter, and I haven't looked back!
For me, the best thing about Curious Kids is getting to see those little sparks in children's minds again, after several years away from the classroom. I just love their enthusiasm for the world around us, and their eagerness to learn more. I remember that what impressed me the most about Sophie's sessions was the way she skilfully balanced fun, engaging activities with genuinely in-depth, accurate science; that's something I always strive for when delivering Curious Kids.
I now run Home-Ed and Saturday Curious Kids in and around Gloucester, Stroud, Dursley and Cirencester; I also deliver after school clubs in various primary schools, and full-day Scientific Enquiry Workshops for schools too, plus nursery sessions. I'm kept very busy!
